telc B1 Sprachbausteine: Choose the Category Before the Answer

Prepare for telc B1 Sprachbausteine with a category-first method for grammar gaps, vocabulary matching, case, verb forms, pronouns, and register.

B1 Atlas · Updated

The fastest way to lose time in Sprachbausteine is to stare at three answers and ask which one sounds right.

Use a smaller question first:

What category is this gap testing?

Once you name the category, you know which rule to use. You stop comparing every option with every possible meaning.

What the telc B1 section contains

The official telc Deutsch B1 format gives Sprachbausteine two parts:

Part What you do Items
Teil 1 choose one of three forms for each grammar gap 10
Teil 2 match words to gaps in a second text 10

The section shares a 90-minute block with Lesen. telc does not assign a separate number of minutes to Sprachbausteine, so your reading pace determines what remains for these 20 items.

The five-category check

For Teil 1, begin with five categories:

Category What to inspect
connector clause meaning and verb position
preposition and case the preposition, then its required case
verb form subject, tense, and the two ends of the verb bracket
pronoun person, case, and register
adjective ending article, case, and the -en default

Do not solve the whole letter at once. For each gap:

  1. Read the complete sentence.
  2. Name the category.
  3. Apply one rule from that category.
  4. Read the completed sentence again for meaning and register.

Worked gap 1: name the connector job

Sehr geehrte Frau Neumann,

Sie haben gefragt, ___ ich die B1-Prüfung am Freitag ablege.

A. wenn · B. ob · C. obwohl

Category: connector. The sentence reports an indirect yes-or-no question. That job needs ob.

Sie haben gefragt, ob ich die B1-Prüfung am Freitag ablege.

The final check is word order. Ob opens the embedded question, and ablege closes it.

Worked gap 2: let the preposition choose the case

Ich fahre ___ zum Zentrum.

A. für den Bus · B. mit dem Bus · C. bei einem Bus

Category: preposition and case. Transport uses mit plus Dativ in this sentence. The answer is mit dem Bus.

Ich fahre mit dem Bus zum Zentrum.

Do not choose dem first and then search for a preposition. Start with mit. The preposition gives you the case.

Worked gap 3: check register after grammar

___ das Ergebnis bitte schicken?

A. Kannst du mir · B. Könnten Sie mir · C. Könnt ihr mir

Category: verb and bracket. The infinitive schicken closes the question. But grammar alone does not finish the item: the letter begins with Sehr geehrte Frau Neumann, so the register must stay formal.

Könnten Sie mir das Ergebnis bitte schicken?

Kannst du mir is correct German in the wrong relationship. That is why you run the register check after the form check.

Teil 2: meaning first, grammar second

In Teil 2, you match 10 gaps with 15 words. Five options do not belong anywhere.

Use a different order:

  1. Read the full sentence around the gap.
  2. Remove words with the wrong meaning.
  3. Use article, case, verb position, or collocation to separate the remaining choices.
  4. Reuse no option unless the instructions explicitly allow it.

Try this example:

Auf das ___ müssen wir dann warten.

Choose from ERGEBNIS, ANTWORTBOGEN, and PRÜFUNG.

The meaning points to the result. The article confirms it: das Ergebnis.

Auf das Ergebnis müssen wir dann warten.

Der Antwortbogen and die Prüfung do not fit das. Meaning and grammar support the same answer.

A 15-minute practice routine

Use one official Sprachbausteine set.

  1. Complete Teil 1. Write a category beside every gap before choosing an answer.
  2. Complete Teil 2. Cross out an option only after both its meaning and grammar fail.
  3. Check the key and record two things for every error: the category and the rule you missed.
  4. Group the errors. If three mistakes are connectors, review connectors instead of repeating the whole set.
  5. Do the same set again later without writing the category labels.

The goal is not to memorise one practice letter. It is to recognise the decision behind a new gap.

Use your errors to choose the next review

Give every wrong answer a repair route:

Error category Review focus
connector weil, dass, wenn, obwohl, ob and the verb at the end
preposition and case the preposition with its case, learned as one unit
verb form the auxiliary or modal near the front and the closing verb form
pronoun case first, then person and register
adjective ending article and case before the ending

This turns a score into a study plan. “Six out of ten” tells you how many were wrong. “Three connector errors and one Dativ error” tells you what to fix.

What to learn next

The indirect-question guide explains the ob pattern in the first worked gap. The Dative-pronoun guide covers the case forms behind many pronoun items.

For the other exam modules, use the German B1 reading strategy, listening strategy, and speaking repair phrases.
