German Polite Requests: Könnten Sie and the Politeness Ladder

German requests do not become polite through one magic word. The verb form, bitte, and the relationship all matter.

Start with the same repair request at four levels:

Reparieren Sie die Heizung bis Freitag.

Bitte reparieren Sie die Heizung bis Freitag.

Könnten Sie die Heizung bitte bis Freitag reparieren?

Ich wäre Ihnen dankbar, wenn Sie die Heizung bis Freitag reparieren könnten.

These four lines form a politeness ladder. The goal is not to use the longest line every time. Choose the level that fits the relationship and the urgency.

The four levels

polite question	use könnten Sie	Könnten Sie die Heizung bitte bis Freitag reparieren?

The first line is a command. The second softens it with bitte. The third turns it into a question. The fourth adds formal distance and gratitude.

For many everyday formal requests, the third level is a strong default:

Könnten Sie die Heizung bitte bis Freitag reparieren?

It is clear about the action and the deadline without sounding like an order.

Build the könnten Sie question

Use this request as your frame:

Könnten Sie die Heizung bitte bis Freitag reparieren?

In this request, könnten comes near the front and reparieren closes the sentence:

Opening	Middle	Infinitive at the end
Könnten Sie	die Heizung bitte bis Freitag	reparieren?

This is the same verb bracket used with modal verbs. Check the two ends first. Then check the details in the middle.

Change du to Sie

The relationship decides which form you need.

Könntest du mir bis heute Abend schreiben?

Könnten Sie mir bis heute Abend schreiben?

The first request uses informal du. The second uses formal Sie. The message stays the same, but the verb and pronoun change together.

Do not mix the two rows inside one request.

Use the formal wenn pattern

The fourth rung uses two high-value Konjunktiv II forms:

Ich wäre Ihnen dankbar, wenn Sie die Heizung bis Freitag reparieren könnten.

The first part uses wäre. In the wenn clause, könnten goes to the end. This creates more distance than the shorter question.

Use this rung when the more formal tone fits. Do not treat it as automatically better than every shorter request.

Put the request after the facts

A useful complaint does not begin with a demand. Give the fact first, then make the request and ask for the next step:

Seit Montag funktioniert die Heizung nicht mehr.

Könnten Sie die Heizung bitte bis Freitag reparieren lassen?

Bitte teilen Sie mir mit, wann der Handwerker kommen kann.

This small sequence does three jobs: it says what happened, names a deadline, and asks for a clear reply. It is not a complete complaint letter.

Learn reparieren lassen here as one fixed chunk. You do not need the full lassen system for this request.

Rebuild each request before looking at the answers.

1. Add bitte to this direct request: Reparieren Sie die Heizung bis Freitag.
2. Change this phone request from du to formal Sie: Könntest du mir bis heute Abend schreiben?
3. Complete the formal pattern: Ich wäre Ihnen dankbar, wenn Sie die Heizung bis Freitag reparieren ___.

Answers:

1. Bitte reparieren Sie die Heizung bis Freitag.
2. Könnten Sie mir bis heute Abend schreiben?
3. Ich wäre Ihnen dankbar, wenn Sie die Heizung bis Freitag reparieren könnten.

Say each answer once. Check the register, the verb near the front, and the infinitive or final verb at the end.
