Kein vs Nicht in German: A Beginner's Decision Rule
Learn when German uses kein and when it uses nicht, choose the right kein ending, and test the rule with four short sentences.
B1 Atlas · Updated
German has two common ways to say that something is not there or not true: kein and nicht. You do not need to guess between them.
Start with one question:
Are you negating a noun that would use ein or no article?
If yes, use kein. If no, use nicht.
Use kein for a noun
Use kein when the negative word belongs directly to a noun.
Compare these examples:
| Noun | Negative sentence | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| das Sofa | Ich habe kein Sofa. | I do not have a sofa. |
| die Lampe | Meine Wohnung hat keine Lampe. | My apartment has no lamp. |
| der Tisch | Ich habe keinen Tisch. | I do not have a table. |
The ending changes because kein follows the same pattern as ein:
| Noun type | Form |
|---|---|
| neuter | kein |
| feminine | keine |
| masculine direct object | keinen |
The last row uses the same masculine object change as ein → einen. If that pattern is new, the beginner accusative guide explains it with der Pass and der Termin.
Use nicht for everything else
Use nicht when you are not negating an ein-type noun. That includes an adjective, another description, or the whole sentence.
| What is negative? | Example |
|---|---|
| the adjective neu | Der Stuhl ist nicht neu. |
| the description praktisch | Der Schrank ist nicht praktisch. |
| the whole sentence | Ich arbeite heute nicht. |
The practical rule for position is small:
- Put nicht before the word you are negating.
- Put nicht at the end when you negate the whole sentence.
In Der Stuhl ist nicht neu., the word neu is what the speaker rejects. In Ich arbeite heute nicht., the complete action is negative.
The two-step check
When you need a negative sentence, use this order:
- Find what you want to negate.
- If it is an ein-type noun, choose kein, keine, or keinen. Otherwise, place nicht with the word or sentence you are negating.
Here is the contrast in one pair:
Der Schrank ist nicht praktisch. Ich habe kein Sofa.
The first sentence rejects a quality, so it uses nicht. The second negates a noun, so it uses kein.
A four-item check
Choose kein, keine, keinen, or nicht. Then say the complete sentence aloud.
- Ich habe ___ Sofa.
- Meine Wohnung hat ___ Lampe.
- Ich habe ___ Tisch.
- Der Stuhl ist ___ neu.
Answers:
- Ich habe kein Sofa.
- Meine Wohnung hat keine Lampe.
- Ich habe keinen Tisch.
- Der Stuhl ist nicht neu.
Do the check once more without looking at the four choices. The useful skill is not naming the rule. It is finding the noun or description and choosing the negative form quickly.
What to learn next
Keep the noun’s article in your vocabulary record. Knowing das Sofa, die Lampe, and der Tisch tells you which kein form to use. The German articles guide gives you a compact article + singular + plural method.
If you are building sentences from the beginning, the first German conversation guide shows the statement and question shapes that carry these forms.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between kein and nicht in German?
Use kein to negate a noun that would take ein or no article. Use nicht to negate everything else, such as an adjective or a whole sentence.
Why is it kein Sofa but keine Lampe?
Kein follows the same pattern as ein. Sofa is neuter, so it takes kein. Lampe is feminine, so it takes keine.
Why does German use keinen Tisch?
Tisch is masculine and is the direct object in Ich habe keinen Tisch. The masculine object ending is -en, just as ein becomes einen.
Where does nicht go in a German sentence?
Put nicht before the word you are negating. Put it at the end when you negate the whole sentence, as in Ich arbeite heute nicht.
