German Articles: How to Learn der, die, das With Every Noun
Learn German nouns as article + singular + plural, use suffix clues without trusting them too far, and practise the method with six everyday examples.
B1 Atlas · Updated
Learning der, die, and das as a separate list creates two jobs. You learn a noun first. Then you try to attach its article later.
Use one job instead: learn article + singular + plural as one unit.
| Article + singular | Plural | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| der Apfel | die Äpfel | apple |
| die Tomate | die Tomaten | tomato |
| das Geschäft | die Geschäfte | shop |
The article is not an extra fact beside the noun. It belongs on the same card, in the same spoken answer, from the first review.
The noun-card rule
Give every noun one fixed record:
article + singular + plural
For a countable noun, your answer should sound like this:
der Markt · die Märkte
Do not answer with only der Markt. Learn the plural at the same time, while the noun is still new.
Some nouns are normally used only in the singular. Their record still shows that fact:
die Milch · (Sg.)
This format gives you the information you need without asking you to rebuild the noun each time you speak or write.
Use endings as clues, not promises
Some noun endings point strongly toward one article. These are useful first checks:
| Likely article | High-value ending clues | Example |
|---|---|---|
| die | -ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft, -ion, -tät, -ik, -ur, -ei, -in; most -e | die Bäckerei |
| der | -er for agents; -ling, -or, -ismus, -ant, -ent, -ist; days, months, seasons | der Verkäufer |
| das | -chen, -lein, -um, -ment; Ge- collectives; verb-infinitive nouns | das Brötchen |
The limit matters. B1 Atlas measured these clues against all 930 nouns in its course list. A listed ending applies to 41% of the nouns. When it applies, it is right 90% of the time. That means it gives the correct article for about 37% of the full list.
So use this order:
- Check the ending.
- Use the clue if one fits.
- Confirm the article in your vocabulary source.
- Store the full noun record.
The ending helps you notice a pattern. It does not remove the need to learn the article.
Keep the plural on the same card
German plurals do not use one ending. They fall into five useful shapes:
| Plural shape | Noun record |
|---|---|
| -n/-en | die Tomate · die Tomaten |
| -e | das Geschäft · die Geschäfte |
| ¨-e | der Markt · die Märkte |
| unchanged or ¨- | der Verkäufer · die Verkäufer · der Apfel · die Äpfel |
| -s | der Euro · die Euros |
These groups help you see what changed. They are not a reason to guess. The safe answer is still the complete record printed in your vocabulary source.
Add ein or eine after the noun is stable
At this stage, you need only two new forms:
| Article family | Indefinite form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| der or das | ein | ein Brot |
| die | eine | eine Tüte |
Start with the noun record. If you know das Brot, you can choose ein Brot. If you know die Tüte, you can choose eine Tüte.
A seven-minute review
Use six noun records:
der Apfel · die Äpfel
die Tomate · die Tomaten
das Geschäft · die Geschäfte
der Markt · die Märkte
der Verkäufer · die Verkäufer
der Euro · die Euros
Then practise in this order:
- Read every full record aloud once.
- Cover the article. Say the article and singular noun.
- Cover the plural. Say the whole record from memory.
- Sort the six nouns into der, die, and das groups.
- Wait ten minutes, then retrieve all six again without reading.
If one answer is wrong, correct that record and repeat it once. The goal is not a longer session. It is one complete noun recalled without a mistake.
Try the method once
Complete each record before checking the answers:
- ___ Apfel · die ___
- ___ Tomate · die ___
- ___ Geschäft · die ___
- ___ Markt · die ___
Answers:
- der Apfel · die Äpfel
- die Tomate · die Tomaten
- das Geschäft · die Geschäfte
- der Markt · die Märkte
You now have one repeatable method: check the ending, confirm the article, then learn article + singular + plural as one unit.
What to learn next
Use the same card shape for every new noun you meet. The B1 vocabulary guide explains how B1 Atlas chooses high-value words and stores them inside reusable chunks.
If you are at the start of German, the first-conversation guide gives you a short spoken task to pair with this noun practice.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best way to learn der, die, das?
Learn the article with the noun from the first review. Store one unit: article + singular + plural. Do not learn a bare noun and plan to add its article later.
Can I work out a German noun's article from its ending?
Sometimes. The suffix guide gives the correct article for about 37% of nouns. When a listed ending applies, it is right about nine times in ten. The other nouns still need to be learned with their articles.
Should I learn German plurals at the same time as articles?
Yes. Keep the article, singular noun and plural together. German plurals follow several patterns, so storing the full plural is safer than guessing it later.
Why does a German vocabulary card need the plural?
The plural is part of the noun you need in real sentences. A card such as der Apfel · die Äpfel gives you the singular article and the plural form in one review.
